For a little while this morning on social media, it appeared that Houston rap icon Bushwick Bill of the Geto Boys had succumbed to his fight against pancreatic cancer.
That, however, is not the case — not yet, at least — and while the rapper is “fighting for his life” in the hospital against the deadly disease, he has NOT passed away, as had been reported by some outlets just hours ago.
It’s easy to understand how the confusion came through; the rapper’s contemporaries in the industry, including longtime fellow Houston rap leaders Scarface and Bun B, posted tributes to Bushwick Bill early this morning on social media (as you can see, below):
April 7. The last time I saw him. He was, is and will always be a legend. God bless his soul and his family. There will never be another. RIP Bushwick Bill. Geto Boys. https://t.co/KUfgxHSAQa

From there, media outlets and the general public ran with mourning Bill’s passing — which made sense, as he’s been fighting an aggressive, serious form of pancreatic cancer. Those fears of his death were further thought to be confirmed after Bill failed to show up for a gig last night in Dallas; he had been scheduled to make an appearance at a show, but was unable to do so.
Put two and two together, add in the wildfire-spreading element of social media in this day and age, and suddenly Bushwick Bill was trending and thousands of people were mourning his apparent death.
But just a couple hours ago, Bill’s own daughter denied the reports of death, and instead revealed that the rap legend was still alive, and “fighting for his life” in the hospital as of early Sunday afternoon.
She continued, taking to Instagram and cryptically writing (below):
“Certain people have been so quick to write him off as dead so they can capitalize off it. There is no Geto Boys without Bushwick Bill.”
She’s certainly not wrong about that last part, at least! Bill’s publicist later confirmed to TMZ that the rapper “is still alive and fighting cancer” in a hospital — although the prognosis may be ultimately pretty grim, as some family members are reportedly already by his bedside, with others quickly heading to Houston to join them.
Even his missed Dallas gig last night was expected — Bill had been on the slate, but days ago, when it was clear he wasn’t going to be up for it, his team called in about him missing out. So while social media ran with the wrong thing… it was all a false alarm.
Still, after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer just three moths ago, Bill is in for the fight of his life against a very difficult disease. Here’s hoping the intensive chemotherapy and more can do the trick.
For those not in the know, Bushwick Bill’s name is iconic in the rap world; along with Scarface and Willie D, Bill was one-third of the impactful group Geto Boys, who first broke through from Houston in 1988 and signed with Rap-A-Lot Records.
Our thoughts are with Bill and his family during this difficult time.
